An easy recipe for keeping your flowers fresh for longer – simply dissolve three tablespoons of sugar with two tablespoons of white vinegar with a litre of warm water. If you want two litres then double the sugar and vinegar. When you fill the vase, ensure the cut stems are covered by 3 – 4 inches of the mixture you created. The sugar nourishes the plants and the vinegar inhibits bacterial growth. This little recipe will keep your flowers fresh for a considerably longer amount of time!
It may sound crazy, but Vodka is great for keeping cut flowers looking fresh! The main factor to consider when attempting to keep flowers healthier for longer is to attempt to minimise the growth of bacteria in the water and to provide nourishment to replace what the flower would have received had it not been cut. If you add a few drops of Vodka to the water along with a teaspoon of sugar, this will help kill keep them alive longer and looking beautifully fresh. Try and change the water every other day, whilst refreshing the vodka and sugar at the same time. You’ll see a great difference in how long the flowers last!
